The City of Frederick is poised to become a model city for sustainability. A sustainable 21st century city is one that manages all of its resources.
-
•We must adopt an aggressive resource recovery plan—a plan that includes reducing unnecessary packaging, a plan that increases recycling, and a plan that re-uses those things that we now throw in a landfill.
-
•We need to mount an extensive education campaign so that recycling will be as easy and automatic as fastening your seat belt.
-
•We need to get serious about reducing energy consumption in both public and private facilities, and we need to encourage the use of alternative energy technologies in our homes, schools and public places. Changing light bulbs is a start, but it's not a plan.
-
•We need an energy efficient, reliable mass transportation system to bring people into town.
-
•We need bicycle and walking paths throughout the city to promote walkability and encourage environmentally friendly transportation.
With new and informed leadership that is pro-active, we can embrace technologies and practices that put us on the path to sustainability.
